You have made a good start on this activity! I wouldn't want to be in a Waka Ama race either. Not because I would be afraid of the Waka breaking but because I would be worried about it rolling over and tipping me out!
Have you ever been in a kayak or a canoe before? Being in one of these would be quite similar to being in a waka. I have been in a kayak a few times but always end up getting sea sick.
